Let's prepare for SB 25-200: Dyslexia Screening and READ Act Updates!

Join Us for a READ Act Systems Work Day in Limon! During this hands-on session, district literacy teams will use the READ Act Implementation Tracker to review and strengthen their current READ Act systems. Participants will also begin developing a district-specific READ Act Handbook to document local processes and practices, helping districts prepare for new Dyslexia legislative requirements in the 2027-28 school year. 

We encourage districts to bring a team, including administrators, Title I teachers, EL/ML coordinators, interventionists, and any other staff involved in READ Act implementation. This work day will provide practical tools, guidance, and dedicated planning time to help districts strengthen their systems and prepare for the future. Please register on the EC BOCES website as soon as possible so we can provide CDE with an accurate participant count for planning and finalize our lunch numbers.

CDE has free, self-paced literacy courses available for teachers! Topics include reading interventions for multilingual learners, dyslexia, structured literacy, written expression, and biliteracy. Courses range from 2.5 to 5 hours and can be completed on your own time.

EC BOCES will pay a stipend of up to $20 per hour for teachers who complete an asynchronous course and submit their certificate of completion.

Please note: These courses are additional professional learning opportunities and do not count toward required READ Act training.

We have been offered a very reasonably priced BOCES wide license for BlocksCAD - this is an online curriculum and program that teaches coding and 3D printing skills and is aligned to Common Core Math.  It allows students to create models in an easy format and take it all the way to creating 3D models.  Please take just a couple of minutes to respond to this very short form about your interest in this.

We appear to have had a rash of hacked emails recently.  The most common reason for this is that people are clicking on attachments in the emails which then gives the hackers access to their account.

Please NEVER just click on an attachment just because you recognize the sender.  Please be VERY cautious with any email you receive and unless you are expecting someone to send you something, always verify it by calling the person first.

You can normally identify a suspicious email by the language used but that is not always the case.  With AI tools now, it is much easier to mimic another person so you really have to be diligent. 

If there is ANY doubt at all or you are not expecting an email from that person, just DO NOT OPEN attachments.  Call the person that sent it - if they didn't send it, then they need to immediately change their password and then have their tech people review their email account to see if there are settings that need fixed in it.  (Often a hacker will forward all incoming emails elsewhere so they can still access them.) Delete the email in question and you should be fine.

We have been able to bring back our login server, website and student moodle site. As such, you should be able to login to Enrich and any other sites that use our SSO login.

Due to the probability of bad weather this Friday, the decision was made to move the CPI - Verbal Interventions from January 23rd to February 27th.  If you have already signed up for this class your registration will carry over to the newly rescheduled date.  If you want to take this class and have not yet registered, please go to the calendar and click on the February 27th date and sign up for it there.  If you already registered and cannot attend on the rescheduled date, please go in and cancel your registration so your district won't be charged for you non-attendance to this class.  We are sorry for the inconvenience, but much easier to reschedule than to try and contact everyone the morning of the class.

Course Descriptions:

CLD & Gifted Level 1 - This course introduces educators to the unique characteristics and needs of high abilities students from diverse populations. You will investigate teaching strategies used to develop talent, multiple pathways to gifted identification and best practices for increasing cultural competence within schools and systems. Language acquisition, local data, and culturally fair assessment are added topics.

CLD & Gifted Level 2 - This course covers theories, concepts, and research regarding assessment, language acquisition, and literacy development. Authentic assessment, academic vocabulary, increasing rigor for CLD students, and simple differentiation strategies also included.

CLD and Gifted Level 3 - Educators will explore, plan for, and implement teaching strategies. Current practices will be adapted with the aim of building critical thinking and cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) in students from diverse backgrounds. Educators will apply new knowledge through a case study or PD design.

Important:

• Courses should be taken in order and will count towards the CLD re-licensure requirement.

• Sign up only for levels you know you can finish this semester. This opportunity will be available over the summer but tuition will not roll over if coursework isn’t completed by May 15th. Reimbursements from ECBOCES for ECBOCES educators will only be available for courses completed by May 15th. 

• Participants will receive 15 CEUs upon completion of each course.

Gifted Identification of Multilingual Learners

When you log into our website, you will see a notice on your dashboard regarding this.  Two factor authentication (2FA) will be mandatory starting November 1st.  At that time, anyone that has not set up 2FA will not be able to log into until they have done that.  

We highly recommend taking a few minutes to get this set up before it becomes mandatory.  It will require the installation of an app on your phone and you will need this app to get a code to allow you to login.  Full instructions are provided by clicking on the notification on the dashboard with links to the available apps and the link to get the process started.

Renewal requirements, mandated either by legislation or the state board, are in effect or will be soon for all professional license-holders:

Special education/behavioral health requirement: Anyone seeking to renew a professional teacher, special services, principal or administrator license on or after – or one that expires on or after – June 30 must have completed a minimum of 10 of the required 90 hours in professional development related to student behavioral health (teachers only) and educating students with disabilities (teachers, special services providers, principals and administrators). Visit this webpage for more details and to ensure any professional development chosen aligns with the legislation’s stated requirements.

English learner professional learning: Anyone seeking to renew a professional teacher license on or after – or one that expires on or after – Sept. 1 that holds an elementary education, English language arts, mathematics, middle school mathematics, science or social studies endorsement also must meet the ELL professional learning requirement. This is true regardless of whether they presently are teaching in the content area(s). Individuals who hold an LDE, LDE bilingual, CLD or CLD bilingual education endorsement automatically meet this requirement. 

Individuals who met the requirement during their last renewal cycle – or who have an approved waiver for this renewal cycle – must meet the special education/behavioral health requirement featured above; however, neither the documentation for satisfying this requirement during the last renewal cycle nor an approved waiver factor into this renewal’s 90-hour requirement.

The CDE provided READ Act online K-12 Teacher and Administrator 5- and 20-hour trainings will be moved over to an upgraded Learning Management System June 20th through June 27th.  During this time, educators will not be able to register for or access these courses. On June 28, 2025, the Learning Management System upgrade will be complete, and users enrolled in the K-12 Teacher and Administrator 5- and 20-hour trainings will have access to the content they are enrolled in, as well as two new optional modules on Structured Literacy Instruction and Written Expression.

 The CDE provided READ Act online K-3 Teacher Training that was available to educators until August 1, 2023, will officially sunset on June 19, 2025. Users who registered for this training prior to August 1, 2023, must complete the course and final assessment by 11:59 PM MT on June 19, 2025, to receive credit and a certificate of completion.

May 2025 WIDA Academies   

In-person professional learning workshops and will focus on topics relevant to educators of multilingual learners. Educators from within and outside of the WIDA Consortium are invited to attend open-enrollment workshops facilitated by WIDA professional learning specialists. Registration for Afirmando la Experiencia Bilingüe con el Marco DALE occurring on May 6, in Denver is now available. This one-day bilingual academy is designed for Spanish/English bilingual K-12 educators, administrators, coaches, curriculum coordinators, and support staff with minimal experience using el Marco de los estándares del desarrollo auténtico del lenguaje español de WIDA (Marco DALE).    

WIDA Writing with Multilingual Learners in the Elementary Grades     

Writing with Multilingual Learners in the Elementary Grades, a two-day in-person workshop that focuses on writing instruction that supports the use of the Teaching and Learning Cycle as a way to empower multilingual writers, not only to produce successful academic writing but, more importantly, to communicate effectively for a variety of purposes and different audiences. In this interactive workshop occurring on May 8-9, educators will explore a pedagogical approach that apprentices multilingual learners into writing in various academic genres. Specifically, looking at examples of this in science and consider how this approach develops multilingual learners’ writing skills and their awareness of how language works in written form, allowing them to become effective and informed writers not only in science but across content areas. Interested in growing your math instruction? Statements of interest are now open for the third cohort of CDE’s Powerful Practice: Evidence-Informed Math Teaching course. This free, self-paced, 14-module course helps K-12 educators explore effective strategies and collaborate with peers to strengthen their practice. Facilitation guides support schoolwide learning, and optional graduate credit is available through Adams State University.

This year's conference is a special collaboration between Fort Lewis College, Colorado Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CoTESOL), and the CDE. This two-day event is designed for Special Education Teachers, Special Service Providers, English Language Development Teachers, and Administrators.   MLACAS is an excellent opportunity to share and discuss resources and strategies to ensure that MLs receive high-quality special education services that meet their unique needs. This conference is a great opportunity for educators who work with MLs and Indigenous students, and CDE is excited to offer certificates for 6.0 Special Education and Behavioral Health and 6.0 EL PD recertification hours for all who attend both days and complete an action plan. Slots will be limited, so please register early.

Cost: $75 per course. The fee will be reimbursed to ECBOCES educators who complete the course(s) by May 9th. Register only for the course(s) you will be able to finish by May 9th. The fee will not roll over nor will there be any reimbursements for courses not completed by May 9th.

The consultants will focus on what it means to be 2e: definition, characteristics, strengths, and how to identify and serve these students.

WIDA Self-Paced Professional Learning  

12 self-paced workshops are available to Colorado K-12 public school educators with a district email address at no cost from Sept. 1, 2024 – Aug. 31, 2025. The content is relevant for all educators: school leaders, coaches and facilitators, K-12 classroom teachers, ELD coordinators and specialists, and professional learning communities. Virtual workshops are available under the Professional Learning tab within the WIDA Secure Portal (a valid login required to participate in workshops).   

Accessing WIDA professional learning:  

1. Log in to your WIDA Secure Portal account. Don’t have an account yet? Contact your District Assessment Coordinator for account activation.  
2. Locate the course and click on Course Details. Click Enroll Now.  
3. Complete a self-paced workshop and print your certificate by August 31, 2025.

Due to inclement weather conditions, the CPI Class scheduled for Friday, November 8, 2024, has been canceled. It has been rescheduled for December 6, 2024.
